Resources

Each external resource, whether it is a website, book, clinic, hotline, retail store, club, or anything else, should be listed on its own page.

The name of the page should be descriptive of the resource. For example, the page Planned Parenthood Golden Gate contains all the information about this particular resource.

Common information, such as the name of the resource, what kind of resource it is (tags), addresses, and phone numbers, are stored in a special format so that they can be displayed by a special template called, imaginatively enough, Template:Resource. If you click through to this template, you will see a complete list of all of the special fields available in that template.

{{Resource
 |name=Planned Parenthood Golden Gate
 |tags=Clinics, Local, STD Testing,Abortion Services, Family Planning
 |hours=Mon/Thu 9am-5pm, Tue/Fri 7:30am-5pm, Wed 11am-7pm, Sat 8am-2pm; plus daily drop-in hours for emergency contraception (consult web site for hours)
 |address=815 Eddy St.
 |phone=(800) 967-7526 (appointment line)
 |url=http://www.ppgg.org
 |description=For other locations, call (800) 230-7526 or check http://www.plannedparenthood.org
 }}

A page with this information would display like this:

[[{{{%PAGE%}}}|Planned Parenthood Golden Gate]]
For other locations, call (800) 230-7526 or check http://www.plannedparenthood.org
815 Eddy St.
Hours: Mon/Thu 9am-5pm, Tue/Fri 7:30am-5pm, Wed 11am-7pm, Sat 8am-2pm; plus daily drop-in hours for emergency contraception (consult web site for hours)
(800) 967-7526 (appointment line)
http://www.ppgg.org

Please always delimit resources using this method. This allows us to dynamically build lists of our resources and display them in a consistent fashion. If you don't like the way we display resources, or you think we should add more fields, contact the wiki sysop's for more assistance.

Citing a Book

A book is just another form of resource, for example, the book Anal Pleasure and Health was created with a resource entry that looks like this:

{{Resource
|name=Anal Pleasure & Health: A Guide for Men and Women
|author=Jack Morin
|tags=Anal Sex
|description=An excellent book that helps men and women of all orientations appreciate anal pleasure. Topics include getting used to your own body, anal intercourse, rimming, and health and safety issues.
|isbn=0940208202
}}

When we want to refer to that book (such as in an answer to a question), just use the Book template, referring to the page of the book resource (that's the page name, not the title of the book). This template generates a link to the resource page and also a "Buy" link which points to Amazon.com with our affiliate identification. (For this reason, the template itself is protected so it can't be hacked.)

For more information, check out {{Book|Anal Pleasure and Health}} which is a great guide to anal sex.

which produces output like this:

For more information, check out Anal Pleasure & Health: A Guide for Men and Women by Jack Morin [Buy] which is a great guide to anal sex.

Guru Information & DPL Help

First off, please hide any magic inside of templates, rather than coding it directly onto a page. This lets people reuse any components you stressed so hard to get "just right." Think twice about how your templates are going to work, and try to think about it being a generic tool that will be used over and over again. Don't be afraid to ask for help from User:HotKarl or User:Phoenix or other wiki gurus.

When you want to create a list of resources, use the Dynamic Page Extension feature to generate your lists...

for example:

<dpl>
  category=Abortion Services
</dpl>

generates a bullet list of pages tagged with Abortion Services.

You can also use DPL to include the contents of the pages:

<dpl>
category=Abortion Services
includepage={Resource} nocat
format=,,,
</dpl>

Generates:

Note: we used a very specific form of includepage instead of includepage=* because the Resource template automatically adds pages to categories, and we don't want that in our example and category pages.

DPL is a very powerful feature. Check out the DPL documentation for more help.
